MEEK NO. 44 RARE ORIGINAL ANTIQUE FLY FISHING REEL' Description Meek No. 44 Rare Fly Fishing Reel in flawless excellent condition The rare early model with the flat black, decoratively knurled edges on both front and backplates, seldom encountered left hand wind operation, ivory knob, fine screw heads, backplate marked "B.F. Merek & Sons Louisville, KY #44, Ser. #282X," measures 1.5" x 2.25," attractive scribe circular line detail on faceplate and beneath handle area. Excellent specimen would be valued in the 1999 edition of "Antique Fly Reels" by D.B. Homel at $10,000.00. And today, with quality antique fishing tackle being hauted by their present owners, it is, indeed, scarce to see a reel of this quality surface for sale. But, I being recently retired with 3 college age children, am forced to part with some of the high end pieces of my cherished collection. Built entirely of German silver, the renowned raised-rim No. 44 was the company's only single action fly reel which was introduced in late 1899 and continued in limited production until 1916, when the company was sold to Horton Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island. Described in "Classic & Antique Fly Fishing Tackle," by A.J. Campbell, page 185, "The Meek No. 44 was one of the most appealing fly reels ever built... it has sold for higher prices than either the Talbot Ben Hur or the Gayle Aluminum Trout Reel and remains one of the most coveted reels of the classic era." B.F. Meek was a watchmaker in Kentucky in 1882 when he established his reel making shop.
